Mouni Roy
This small-screen starlet , Mouni Roy caught the attention of viewers across the country by acting in the hugely popular television soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She plays the grown-up self of Krishna Tulsi. Getting a break in the Balaji Productions was totally unexpected for her. She has participated in several theater shows and street plays. Her passion lied in acting and when she got a call from the Balajis she was bubbling with excitement. After being a part of this industry she has realized the hard work put in by the others and hence stopped criticizing the dailiy soaps.
This actress hails from a middle class Bengali family in Cooch Behar in the state of West Bengal. Her father Anil Roy is the office superintendent of the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad and her mother Mukti Roy is a high school teacher. She had done her schooling from the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat, Cooch Behar.
She completed her graduation English Honors from Miranda House in New Delhi. Then she enrolled for her Masters in Mass Communication in Jamia Milia University in New Delhi and it is at this time when the Balaji bug hit her hard and she was compelled to shot to the tinsel town to chase her dream.
In her school days Mouni was never a good actor but excelled as a dancer. She had the right pedigree of acting from her paternal grandfather Shekhar Chandra Roy who was a well-known theater artiste. She turned herself into a competent choreographer during her college days. But fate definitely had something great in store for her and that is evident from her portrayal in the famous soap.
A series of audition was held all across the nation to play the new character of Krishna Tulsi after the daily took its latest generation leap. And it is in one of these auditions that Mouni Roy got her coveted role. It was all destiny claims this young actress when she is asked how she landed up with the role. While staying in Delhi she was waiting for some friends who were late and all of a sudden made up her mind to go to the audition held in Noida and was lucky enough to bag the role. First she has auditioned for the role of Bhoomi because she was having problems in memorizing the lines of KT but somehow she managed to bag the role of KT because Ekta found all the positive qualities in her.
According to gorgeous actress the reason for the Balaji to launch her was the simplicity that they were hunting for in the character that would play the protégé of Tulsi Virani, the main protagonist of the serial. The reason stated by Ekta Kapoor was that she could visualize her as the protégé of Tulsi the very moment she saw her. Initially she did not want to be a part of this serial as she felt that she would get lost in the huge crowd of Kyunki but when she was assured that nothing like that would happen she decided to give it a shot.
The world of television has always allured her but her parents were not at all prepared for this career move. The thought of being independent and becoming independent however made her shift to Mumbai and take this chance. She also feels that she can relate her reel character very much with her real self, as Mouni is also a girl who is bubbly, simple, has her values in place and is a go-getter in life.
According to her it is quite a real character. She is also very happy about the fact that her seniors have been very good to her and she got to learn a lot from them. She also believes that this break in her career will pave a golden route in the journey of her life. But she also regrets that so much happened in her life at such a short span that she did not get the chance to sit and enjoy it.
Facing the camera for the first time was indeed tough too this actress. On the first day she was not that much nervous as she was the only one shooting that day and did not have any scenes with the senior actors but on the second day of shooting she had butterflies in her stomach, as she was to share the screen space with Smriti Irani. But it turned out to be a great experience for her as Smriti completely made her feel at ease and explained to her the nitty and gritties involved.
According to Mouni, Smriti is an adorable actor as she can emote any given scene at a given time and switch to her real self with equal ease. She also finds it amusing that prior to joining Balaji, she never used to watch `Kyunki` and used to find these sorts of dailies very boring and now it is this daily that has become the most important part of her life. If she had not been an actor she would have done something in the filed of theatre or puppetry shows.
Before joining the daily soaps she presented a reasearch paper on the theatre legend Habib Tanvir. Although the actress has never met this great man she has spoken with him over the phone several times for her research. According to her statements, "He was instrumental in using street plays for social causes…". She also claims that writing a thesis on him and studying his work has been a fabulous and enriching experience and she will cherish it for lifetime. She plans to complete her research work as soon as possible but has no plans for higher studies at present. She admits that her career has taken a turn after joining Balaji and she is enjoying every moment of it.
Mouni Roy gives the full credibility of her acting to her directors, writers and her senior actors who are helping her out to perform better in every stage. Her parents were not keen on her career in acting. They wanted her to complete her studies first and then pursue a profession. She gets very emotional when she thinks of her family and often misses them. She also cannot make them shift to Mumbai as her dad is employed in West Bengal Civil Service.
She had very fleeting interactions with the daily soap queen Ekta Kapoor and she claims proudly that she has not corrected her, much which means that she is good at her work. But she has also added on a serious note that Ekta has asked her to work hard and enjoy less. Her family has also been very supportive throughout. Her mother gushes while telling her that she finds it amazing to see her daughter on the television screen.
